Eolie Islands

 

The islands take name from the Eolo greek god , king of the winds. According to the  mythology, Eolo mended on these islands and gave them name, thanks to his  fame of tamer of the winds. The Eolies are been named patrimony of the humanity by the UNESCO for the exceptional and spectacular volcanic phenomena, in some of its islands...
 
the most suggestive of them is Stromboli, for the presence of an active volcano still. The Stromboli is one of the most active volcanos in europa, its eruptions happen with a middle frequency of around one every time.
 
 
The island is destination of tourists are looking for calm.
Daily, excursions are organized besides, to the volcano with experienced guides that bring to over 900 meters on the level of the sea. Through boats it is possible to reach the rock-cliff of Strombolicchio and Ginostra besides, characteristic place on the island of Stromboli where the only transport mean  are still the mules.

In his trip to Sicily, Goethe reached in 1787 Taormina and appreciated the beauty of the enchanting scenery.
The great german traveller also admired the amphitheater, whose construction goes up again to the Hellenistic period (III sec. B.C.). after that of Syracuse, it is for greatness the second of Sicily.

Etna Volcano

Catania...the back city

Catania...the back city

 

Catania is one of the few cities in Italy to offer much different landscapes.
The Roman Theater  (of the II century), the Odeon (III century), the amphitheater (II century), the Thermal baths of Rotunda, the Thermal baths Achillianes, are currently the greatest visible rests of the Romans in Catania.
The Baroque city has been ruined by the earthquakes that  have raged on this part of Sicily. Its surrounding territory has been more times covered by lava that have reached the sea. But the inhabitans have reconstructed it on its same rubbles. The legend wants that the city has been destroyed seven times during its history….
the Crociferi Street ,in Catania, the road, edged from churches, monasteries and few civil residences, it is a rare example of Baroque Sicilian.
